Supreme Court Rejects ‘Notional’ Compliance in Promotion Dispute

The Supreme Court of India, in SN Sharma v. L. Kantha Rao & Ors., has held that compliance with judicial directions cannot be merely notional or symbolic. Exercising its contempt jurisdiction, the Hon’ble Court directed the respondents to extend actual consequential promotional benefits to the petitioner, rejecting the State’s contention that notional relief alone amounted to compliance.
The judgment reinforces the principle that judicial orders must be implemented in their true spirit and that authorities cannot avoid granting substantive relief through technical or superficial compliance.
